Usually when I sit down to write anything useful with AppleScript I find myself pissing away hours of my time and ending up with something that either a) isn't what I intended or b) doesn't work at all. For some reason tonight was different - a Mail script that can be called from a Rule to display a Growl notification including the senders picture from Address Book. Before it can be used by mail it must first be run standalone in order to set up the Mail app for use in Growl. Also, it helps to have Growl installed.(And yes, I know there is a script available from the Growl people to do basically what I did (and does it better) but that's not the point - I managed to do something interesting with AppleScript damnit. Besides, mine shows pictures. :)

I've been playing around with iWeb more and I can't decide if I like it or not. On the surface it's easy enough to use and fairly feature rich but I've hit a few snags already that don't appear to have easy solutions. For instance, my camcorder takes still photos at 16:9. When pushed from iPhoto to iWeb in blog format these photos are inserted into the page in a square format. I need to go through and manually adjust the size of each posting to have the correct ratio. This involves not only adjusting the image size but the background matte size as well. Very time consuming. Oh well. Here are some pictures of Cthulhu that I pushed out of iPhoto into iWeb in photo page format. posted by pookzilla at 4:42 PM - 2 commentsSaturday, July 22, 2006
I managed to get both my Nerd AND Scot off today. First I purchased a Firewire/USB2 drive enclosure and a 320GB drive to accompany it and then after trying a few shops managed to find some 667MHz DDR2 RAM for my MacBook. It was pricey ($199) but it'll help out a lot with the memory issues I've been seeing while running Parallels. After spending this ungodly sum of money I went to the Highlander Pub where I had some delicious haggis. Sometimes I hate being so memorable. The waitress (whom I've seen there many times before) asked if I needed to see a menu and when I replied no asked if I wanted the haggis. I guess there aren't too many 6' tall chicks covered in tattoos who come in for haggis. Go figure. My Macbook is now making an image of itself onto the new enclosure and when it is finished I'm gonna pry her open and put the ram in. I REALLY hate futzing with hardware like this - assembling the enclosure was bad enough - but I'm sure I'll get through it. The fear is irrational, the fear is irrational, the fear is...
Edit: Okay, pissed off. Two of the screws on the memory cover will not budge. They are stuck so thoroughly that they broke my 00 phillips screwdriver. The metal shaft has become dislodged from the handle at its base. Could I BE more irritated right now? posted by pookzilla at 3:13 PM - 3 comments

Some days I hate software. Really, I do. Today is one of those days.A few weeks ago I got around to installing Bootcamp in order to play my freshly purchased copy of Dawn of War (Gold Edition). At the time I figured 7 GB was more than reasonable for a game that required 4.5GB of HD space when installed. Boy was I wrong. Sure, I managed to get it installed but then when it came time to install the patches required for me to play online I was hosed - the patches required required over a GB of temporary space on top of the installation in order to install. I was stuck without enough space. Today I found the time to blow away my Windows partition thinking that I'd repartition my disk with more space for Windows
Hahahaha. I am so naive. After blowing away the partition Bootcamp was unable to repartition my disk because there were some files that could not be moved. It suggested that I back up my main partition, blow away the disc, and then copy the backup back. A fine idea but I am without that much storage space available to me. New external firewire disk here I come!
Grumblecakes.

The MacBook (henceforth known as Dishwasher II) arrived today and it's almost fully configured to my satisfaction. I haven't run any kind of benchmark yet but it is noticeably faster in every way. I haven't decided if I want to do the BootCamp think yet but if I do it'll only be for Dawn of War (the last PC game I enjoyed). Decisions decisions.Labels: mac

Yah, so, not much to say. The last month has been a solid block of dogfucking (if you'll pardon the expression) and I am bored out of my mind. I'm not where I hoped to be healing wise but I am getting better and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm getting out more and more and making appearances at work (for curry of course). I can't wait for my life to get back to where it was.I ordered a MacBook Pro today. The performance gains were too much to ignore any longer. I ordered the 2.16Ghz model with the 7200RPM drive upgrade. I might eventually go for another gig of RAM but I'm going to hold out for now - the price was spiraling out of control. It should arrive by June 11th.
Anyone want to buy a PowerBook? :)
