Leopard Strikes Again

March 31st, 2008 · No Comments

As yet another example of how Leopard is a massive pile of Fail, my Documents folder is no longer writable. Well, that’s not exactly true. I can drop files in it but I must first authenticate before it’ll allow the operation despite the fact that the file permissions are seemingly okay (at least Finder and the command line tell me they are.) I can’t write to it at all from applications directly and I can’t do it from the command line either.

I have this horrible fear that my system is on the verge of eating itself.

Edit: it appears to have been an issue with my access control list after all (nice thinking McQ). Knowing absolutely nothing about ACLs, however, I was a bit confuzzled as to what course of action I should take. I bit the bullet and downloaded ACL Fix from version tracker and after chewing on my Documents folder for five minutes or so I now seem to have a “normal” Documents folder.  I still dont know how I managed to get into this predicament - as near as I can tell it was the last system upate - but at last I’ll know what to do next time it happens.

Time Machine

March 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Boy am I glad I don’t rely on Time Machine for my one and only backup.  For the second (third?) time my backup volume has been eaten.  I don’t have any idea why - backups are simply failing.  They don’t get beyond the “preparing” stage and when I enter the Time Machine browse mode I don’t see any previous iterations whatsoever.  When it can die under normal operating circumstances I’d hate to see what happens when your machine goes tits up and you actually have to rely on it to restore your data.

I had hoped Leopard would grow on me as time has progressed but it really is a dud.

Are You Experienced?

March 19th, 2008 · 3 Comments

There was a lot of noise made about how e4 is a community affair. It’s a lie.

It’s all really about Steve Northover. We are merely satellites held aloft by his sheer awesomeness. So awesome, in fact, that we’ve abandoned our traditional splash screen in favor of a picture of him. It’s hard to condense so much awesome into 134,225 pixels but I tried my best.

ps: for the record, that guitar wasn’t pink and adorned with Hello Kitty before he touched it. It spontaneously became that way after he touched it. After he was finished playing it became so despondent at the loss of his touch that it immediately started crying. It’s still crying now, days later That’s how awesome we’re talking about.
pps: Awesome.

Where’s George Clooney?

So, my fever didn’t break today as I was hoping and after a quick call to Telehealth Ontario I was off to the ER.  After blood work and xrays I’m happy to say it’s not pneumonia (yet) but all the same I’m on some hardcore antibiotics.  Stupid lung infection!

Sick (TMI)

March 16th, 2008 · No Comments

I was originally scheduled to go to EclipseCon with the majority of my team but for reasons beyond my control that fell through. I am so incredibly thankful for that right now - I am as sick as a DOG. I’ve had a fever off and on for about 48 hours now and a cough that’s occasionally so painful that I get sick. If I had been looking the way I do trying to get on a plane they would have denied me entry. If they DID let me on, I’m sure the other passengers would have swarmed me and tossed me out the door.

I caught a break this time.

Weird, But Amusing Comment Spam

March 12th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I found this in my comment spam folder. It starts off okay but in short order it ceases to make any sense and yet you can still understand the joke. I have to wonder what the purpose of spam like this is… snipped for some off color humor. [Read more →]

I Have Seen Heaven

And it is called Home Outfitters.  Man.  I could spend so many thousands of dollars in there…

Also, today is going to consist of baking and eating cookies, watching movies, warming up in front of the fire, and hoping and praying that the roof does not come down under the weight of the snow.
