For me, The Watchmen are That Band. I’ve probably posted this before but I obliterated the archives for this blog when I migrated to Wordpress from blogger. They are my Beatles. I have incredibly intense memories of my first time hearing their songs and for someone whos memories are usually very fuzzy that’s a big deal.
Their show on Friday night at Mavericks was amazing. Two days later, I’m still smiling as I think back on it. They played all the classics (with the exception of Run and Hide) as well as a bunch more that I wasn’t expecting. All told, I think there were about 20 songs, 4 of which were played as an encore.
The crowd? Insane. Virtually everyone in the crowd was singing along to EVERY song, including myself which (if you know me) is as far out of character as I can get. It was phenomenal - if Danny stalled the crowd was there to back him up 100%. I’ve never seen a crowd that engaged before, it was absolutely wonderful. Early on in the show someone shouted out “new album!” Cagily, Danny responded “well, this would be the first step wouldn’t it.” I could almost cry.
The last few months of my life has sucked. Stress on every front, biting off more than I can chew and over committing myself on what seems like a daily basis, no vacation to speak of and that’s all before the death of my mother and the death of my little girl… it’s sucked. Friday was the first real, unqualified, unencumbered joy I’ve had in a very long time. I’m pretty sure I had a shit eating grin on my face the entire night.
Well, at least during those times where I wasn’t singing my brains out
