title pic Geocache is Go!

Posted by pookzilla on April 22, 2008

Our first Geocache – GC1bF79 – is up and running. It went live by noon or so and immediately after it did I noticed a problem with the instructions. I had it fixed in about 5 minutes but apparently by that time some people had already gotten the originals and did their calculations based on them. The first to find happened sometime after 4pm today and their prize was an Eclipse branded USB stick graceously donated by Paul Webster.

In other news I think I’ll be doing the upgrade to Wordpress 2.5 this evening. A new theme may also be in the works – I really don’t like the one I have now style wise or construction wise. There are a lot of oddities deep in its bowels and I suspect it may be the root cause of some weird 404 issues I’ve been getting.

First, the defeat.  Someone stole the kitty for our work charity chocolate store.  We found it emptied in a back office.  Needless to say I was… displeased.  I wont go into it further – we don’t know who did it.  But I am incredibly disappointed.

Now the wedding victory.  While staying at our FAVOURITE bed and breakfast (Le Petit Prince in Montreal) we were chatting with the manager and owner, Rob, about a search we were undertaking for a particular wedding favor that could only be found at a particular store.  We had already emptied EVERY store in Ottawa of this favor and we were trying to hit up the ones in Montreal as well.  When we mentioned this he immediate offered his services – he would check all of the stores that we could not and arrange to get any he found back to Ottawa for us!  Talk about service!  We loved Le Petit Prince before, but the deal is now officially sealed – it’s the best damn place in the world.

Finally:  Geocaching.  Armed with the location of a cache close near the bed and breakfast we treked out in the cold in an attempt to find it.  It was a difficulty one cache (easy) and we found it in short order!  Tonight (in an effort to cheer myself up) we went searching for some caches near my house.  We found one on our street (difficulty two and a half) as well as one near the school adjacent to our street (a difficulty two as I recall).  Considering it was dark and we still don’t know what we’re doing I think that has to count as a victory!
