Some friends of mine have a tradition of going to the local Rocky Horror Picture Show showing every Halloween. For Christmas, I decided to make Munny representations of the characters they go as.

Each model started off as a standard 4″ white Munny. To accomplish the 3D features I used Apoxie Sculpt (which I obtained from a local online taxidermy retailer). I had never used a modelling apoxy at this scale before and I was weary from my previous experiences at smaller scales but this stuff was an absolute dream to work with – I cannot recommend it highly enough. It was soft, pliable, and remained flexible for at least an hour. When dry, it was easily sanded and its adhesion to the Munny surface was superb.

After sculpting and sanding the dried apoxy I taped off the joints and sprayed each piece individually. There were unfortunate exceptions to this, however. Franks pearls and floorshow Janet’s boa required me to assemble the models prior to spraying.

When the basecoat was dry I painted each model by hand using Games Workshop acrylic paint. This worked well for the most part, but for the skin tones of the face it would have been preferable to use an airbrush – you can kind of see the brush marks on some of the models.

Two of the models (Frank and Columbia) had glitter applied to selected surfaces. I used Martha Stewart glitter and it really is an excellent glitter. If there is one flaw is that it’s TOO fine – it ends up getting everywhere and some of it managed to stick where I didn’t intend it to.

After I was done painting I spray sealed each model with a clear high gloss topcoat. Each model was coated 3 times for a fairly even finish. This also helped settle the glitter, which by this point had infused the entirety of our house. It has been almost a month since I glittered the models and I’m STILL finding the stuff in my hair.

Originally I had intended to encase each model in a glass bell jar. I had even found a supplier on ebay, but I ordered them too late – it didn’t look like they’d arrive until after I needed to give them. Out of desperation I ordered the bases and plaques from a local trophy shop at a very affordable price only to have the jars arrive just as I could have used them. Oh well, I’ll have them for the next Munnys

Overall it was a very fun experience. I definitely learned a lot and I look forward to making more Munnys in the future.

I had incredibly low expectations for this movie. The first one was pretty bad beyond the ZOMG Transformers!!1! aspect but I was still skeptical of the early reviews I had read. The criteria for a “good” summer action blockbuster is pretty minimal – could it really be as bad as the reviews say?

Oh yes. Yes it could. That movie was bloody TERRIBLE. I don’t even know where to begin. Take any given metric of success a “good” movie might express and this movie expresses the exact opposite. The plot is shite, the acting is shite, the graphics are shite (by virtue of the fact that they’re moving so fast the human eye can’t process them), the characters are shite (and sexist and racist and any number of other -ists you care to find) and it’s longer than every movie I’ve ever seen PUT TOGETHER. The whole thing is a debacle. The only point in that whole mess that snapped me out of the list of grievances I was crafting in my head was the appearance of Devastator and they even had to ruin that by giving him a set of f*#@ing testicles. TESTICLES!

The reviews out there are cruel but the kicker is this – THEY AREN’T CRUEL ENOUGH.

Someone, somewhere – please make this movie.

Some random comments about Iron Man, both the film and the movie experience. First, the experience.

We started with a preview for the new Mark Walhburg film “The Happening.” The preview was going fine until they a credit appears attributing it to M. Night Shyamalan at which point the entire theater groans. I am not exaggerating, the noise was audible over the trailer! After we all did it we all started to laugh as well. That man really needs to stop making films. I’ve read spoilers for this one and boy does he take “weak” to a whole new level.

Anyhoo, Iron Man in point form:

the origin story was pretty dumb. Suspending disbelief so that a man can build an iron exoskeleton in three months? Okay. Suspending disbelief that his captors don’t notice him doing it? I have my limits!

it was surprisingly funny at points

Robert Downey Jr. was an excellent choice for Stark

Robert Downey Jr. was incredibly attractive (for a boy)

Lebowski as a villain

sticking around for the end credits was WELL worth it

Last night we went to see Juno with some friends. I wasn’t expecting too much despite the hype but I was completely surprised – I LOVED the film. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a film that much. I’m not sure how to talk about why I enjoyed the film so much without spoiling it but let me just say that a film regarding adoption has the potential to leave me a train wreck emotionally. As the film progressed I feared the ending would have this result but by the time the credits rolled I was smiling. Ellen Page was fresh and charming as Juno and I hope this film is only the first of many for her. Surprisingly enough I also found Jennifer Garner, an actress I don’t have any love for, extremely convincing as a woman desperate for a child. There were points where I found looking at her eyes on screen incredibly uncomfortable – I could actually feel the desperation coming off of her.

So, my review in an nutshell is that it’s awesome. I can’t remember the last time left a theatre more excited than I was when I left Cloverfield. Except for some minor plot quibbles I thought it was excellent. The monster was excellent, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, and the characters (if not likeable) were largely believable.

I can’t wait for the DVD.
