For me, The Watchmen are That Band. I’ve probably posted this before but I obliterated the archives for this blog when I migrated to Wordpress from blogger. They are my Beatles. I have incredibly intense memories of my first time hearing their songs and for someone whos memories are usually very fuzzy that’s a big deal.

Their show on Friday night at Mavericks was amazing. Two days later, I’m still smiling as I think back on it. They played all the classics (with the exception of Run and Hide) as well as a bunch more that I wasn’t expecting. All told, I think there were about 20 songs, 4 of which were played as an encore.

The crowd? Insane. Virtually everyone in the crowd was singing along to EVERY song, including myself which (if you know me) is as far out of character as I can get. It was phenomenal - if Danny stalled the crowd was there to back him up 100%. I’ve never seen a crowd that engaged before, it was absolutely wonderful. Early on in the show someone shouted out “new album!” Cagily, Danny responded “well, this would be the first step wouldn’t it.” I could almost cry.

The last few months of my life has sucked. Stress on every front, biting off more than I can chew and over committing myself on what seems like a daily basis, no vacation to speak of and that’s all before the death of my mother and the death of my little girl… it’s sucked. Friday was the first real, unqualified, unencumbered joy I’ve had in a very long time. I’m pretty sure I had a shit eating grin on my face the entire night.

Well, at least during those times where I wasn’t singing my brains out

Lexy and I hopped aboard a train mid day Thursday and headed off to Montreal to meet up with a friend so that we could all go and see Rush play at the Bell Center. I saw them in Ottawa last year and they were excellent and this show was as good or better. The seats weren’t nearly as good (no 12th row floor this time) but the sound quality was much better and there was an added vignette that was both funny and creepy. The highlight for me was once again Natural Science with Subdivisions as a close second.

It wasn’t all good though. Once again we had to deal with That Drunk. You know, the one who slops beer on you and elbows you in the head? Yeah, him. He was sitting directly behind Lexy and was knocking her chair around quite a bit. He must’ve realized what he was doing because he eventually leaned over and put both his arms around her neck. Apparently he was apologizing to her but of course, to me, I see a drunk man strangling my wife-to-be, so I haul off and smack him and push him off of her. He gets this “oh shit, I’m so drunk and sorry look” about him and backs off. From here on out I’m watching him out of the corner of my eye waiting for it to happen again, but I think he decided to bug his neighbor instead.

Still, an excellent show and I’ll definitely go see them again if they’re close by.
